East Anglian OES Club Open Show
22.01.2012, Judge: Mark Wibier (Sweet Expressions
)

Firstly I would like to thank the East Anglian Old English Sheepdog Club for inviting me to judge this year's January Open Show in St Ives and the exhibitors to enter their dogs under me. When I was invited to come over to East Anglia I was promised to have a sweet teaste of 'olde' England, and I did! The hospitality and the atmosphere at the show were second to none. A big thankyou for the exhibitors for your sportsmanship.

I really enjoyed my day out with your dogs. I am very pleased with such a lovely entry at a time in which the numbers of entries are decreasing in and outside the UK. I think that most readers agree with me when I say that it is hard to imagine a more beautiful view than a good class of well groomed OES in a showring. Talking about grooming, as many know I do not fancy the excessively grooming style that can be seen in the showring nowadays in Europe. Often the new fashion does not do justice to the individual animals. I was happy to see no dogs in this style of grooming. Although, some of the dogs would show even better shape if the underline wasn't styled. It would have looked much more natural and typical to the breed. Apart from this point of critique I felt happy to see so many lovely dogs in the line-up for best bitch and best male.

For me judging on the positive features rather than the faults of a dog is essential. When it comes to decisions I always try to find a balance in the qualities of any individual animal with a favour for the breed specific characteristics and type. Although this may not be a reason to ignore what needs improvement. Generally, the angulations and length of neck need extra attention. Also, the proportions are very important to get the typical shape of the OES. Some of the dogs were too long in body. Also the colouring of the eyes is a concern in the breed. I had dogs with lighter eyes in my rings all over Europe. Even when dogs don't move on their eyes, the colour doesn't influence the 'Fit for Function' ideal laid down by the Kennel Club, it makes or breaks the sweet expression of the animal. When it comes to movement, some dogs didn't show their real movement as they were not able to do so due to the absence of a clip. It is hard to expect that young dogs go around the ring soundly and self-confident when they are nearly blindfolded with hair.

One characteristic I can't complain about at all is temperament. All shown dogs had a wonderful temperament!
