                                            Judges Critique

Please find listed below my critique for The East Anglian Old English Sheepdog Club Open Show held on Sunday 25^th January 2015 at The Burgess Civic Centre, St Ives, Cambridgeshire.

Thanks to the East Anglian OES Club inviting me to judge their Open Show, I send my best wishes to the appointed judge: Joachim Pilz who withdrew before entries closed due to ill health. I wish him a speedy recovery.

It was lovely to be back once again with my beloved Old English Sheepdogs.

We had a large ring inside and fully carpeted I found movement has improved once again with the lovely drive required in the breed standard today. It was difficult once again to find the gentle rising top line in the males but when I got to the bitches it was there!  Coats were good and some very harsh coats in some cases and all correct.  Still a few problems with mouths and not too many large heads these days. Once again I was very impressed with the temperaments of all the exhibits, they were FIRST CLASS absolutely A1, which we expect from our most faithful friends/companions and my first consideration of this breed when judging.

Veteran Dog or Bitch 4

 

1^st        Birdsall’s BEAUVALLON VANITY FAIR AT PALAMINE

Upstanding lovely bitch! Almost 9 years old and moving very well.  She looked a picture and was well in contention for Reserve Best Bitch.  Lovely condition well looked after coat.  Showing no signs of her age.  A pleasure to go over and judge. I loved her and her sweet happy expression.

 

2^nd       Robertson’s CHAZMATCH BLUE BOY WONDER AT HICKORYSTIX

Unlucky to meet my winner. 8 years old in very good condition and coat. Smaller dog, very well-muscled for age moved well.

 

3^rd        Hudson’s HALFNHALF HARVEST MOON.

 

Puppy Dog 1

 

1^st        Harris’ ARYAKAS SIMONIDES AT BEAUVALLON

Good head, wall eyed.  Good shoulders and reach of neck. Impressive depth of brisket. Good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. Coat in puppy Stage. Moved well and with ease.  RESERVE PUPPY IN SHOW

 

Junior Dog 3

 

1^st        Basforth-Monk & Reed’s CHARMLEA CLEANSWEEP

Gorgeous Dog. Stood out in class. Lovely head and neck, square body,

Good bend of stifle.  Expertly shown and moved very well. Coat crisp even for a junior. A dog for the future with great prospects of gaining his crown when mature. RESERVE BEST DOG.

 

2^nd       Brophy’s JUVALYN PLAY IT AGAIN BOGIE

Very nice dog. Just over 12 months. Nice head, two dark eyes. Good reach of neck. Lovely front and shoulders. Well boned, compact. Moved well.   Still needing coat change but it will come.

 

3^rd        Wallis-Patman’s CHERRYROW’S CHILTERN DROVER

            14 months still needs lots of time to mature.  It will come!

            Small dog, nice head, neck and shoulders, compact.  Changing coats. Neat hocks

            Moved correctly.

 

Open Dog 4 (2 abs)

 

1^st        Oakes’ GOJOLEGA STARGAZER AT AMBLEOAK

            Wow! An old fashioned “Bobtail”. Lovely looking dog. Good head proportions,              One dark ear, nice eyes. Wonderful reach of neck flowing into well angulated

Shoulder placement. Very compact body. Nice angulated stifles and neat hocks. Very well coated body of correct texture. Moved extremely well around the ring. This boy is well on his way to the top and hope he gains his crown very soon! Just short of 3 years old now coming to his peak. BEST DOG AND BEST IN SHOW.

2.         Leggett’s MILLWINKIE MAGIC MOON AT MELDALE

                Another nice dog but totally different type to 1. Small in size which is correct.       Nice head, two dark eyes. Good neck, coat shorter but of correct texture. Compact body. Neat hocks.  Moved very well.

 

Minor Puppy Bitch 1

 

1^st        Castles’ MOLYNEUX LIVE THE DREAM

Nice puppy just six months. Good head, two dark eyes with pigment. Lovely reach of neck.  A lovely gentle rising top line. Compact body. Moved well for one so young. Showing great promise. RESERVE BEST PUPPY BITCH

 

Puppy Bitch 3 (2 abs).

 1^st        Bull’s BRINKLEY BUBBLICIOUS AT VALLEYDELL

Just coming up for 12 months, upstanding bitch. Lovely head, good reach of neck. Square shaped body with good rear angulation. Junior coat coming, with good texture. Moved well and pulled it off for BEST PUPPY BITCH AND BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

 

Junior Bitch 2

 

1^st        Adock & Reed’s CHARMLEA DELIGHTFUL AT KRISENDAW

And what a delight this girl is! Just 17 months, smaller bitch with such a sweet expression. Standing beautifully upright with head and nose in the air. So nice to see this as it has been lost in exhibiting nowadays. Lovely wall eye, head in proportion to size. Good reach of neck, square body and good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. Coat still needs time. Movement was good she paced at times but this was corrected. Not a fault but true “Bobtail” movement. Litter sister to my Junior dog winner.  What a wonderful litter, the breeder must be very proud.

RESERVE BEST BITCH.  In the challenge the Limit bitch had the edge and this was solely on maturity.

           

2^nd       Goddard’s KINDAMAGIC DREAM CHASER

            Another upstanding bitch. Good head and neck. Square body shape, neat hocks. Moved well. Needs more time coat wise as lots of brown coat showing today. It could have been the spotlights highlighting the colour. A very nice bitch.  

 

Post Graduate Bitch 3

 

1^st        Wheeler’s ZOTTELS BETTE MIDLER

Lovely yearling bitch in light grey coat.  Nice head, good neck, compact body.  Good depth of brisket. Well angulated rear, neat hocks.  Moved well. Handler did well as new to showing.

 

2^nd       Crane-Duplocks’ ARYAKAS OPHELIA AT MIRENE

            Another appealing bitch.  Sound in all ways.  Moved very well today, Darker coat changing. Good topline. Stood and showed very well.

 

3^rd        Halladays’ SAPPHIRE GLOW

            Liked head markings.

           

Limit Bitch 5 (1abs)

 

1^st        Reynold’s CILLASTYLE CEECEE COOKIE

An old fashioned girl and so sound. Lovely head and neck, good body with nice depth of brisket. Lots of coat, still changing but crisp in texture. Good rising topline. Moved very well indeed, she could have worked all day. Well-muscled rear end. This girl gets lots of exercise. She also has personality plus and I love naughty girls! BEST BITCH AND RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.

 

2nd      Barton’s AMBLESEA TRAILING ROSE AT AMBLEHAY

            Smaller bitch, stunning to look at in show stance. Nice head, neck and coat.  Short in back with well angulated rear with neat hocks.  Coat of good colour and texture. Moved out well but tended to throw her left hock out at times. A lovely bitch.

 

3^rd        Robertson’s GOJOLEGA MOONLIGHT MINX AT HICKORYSTIX

            Extremely nice quality bitch.

 

Open Bitch 4 (2 abs).

 

1^st        Winson’s MEISAN ROLY POLY ANGELIQUE

White headed bitch, all in proportion. Showing a good length of neck. Compact mature body. Nice rear with neat hocks. Moved well. Looks a picture standing and has the sculptured appearance. Little short on coat but it has good texture

 

2^nd       Hodgson’s JEDDEP KATWALK KIKKI AT RAGGLEBARN

Another nice bitch. Good head in proportion to body with lovely expression. Nice neck. Square body with good depth of brisket.  Good rising topline. Excellent coat.  Moved well, even better on her own without her handler!
